What is communion?

At Summit Church we worship with communion on a regular basis because it’s an act of celebration where we join together to remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for all of mankind. Jesus was broken for us so that we can be renewed in Him.

Where did communion come from?

As Jesus was approaching His time before the crucifixion He gathered with the disciples for the last supper and instituted the tradition of communion (Luke 22:14-20).

Paul reminds us to continue this practice as he quotes Jesus' instruction to His followers to use bread and wine to remember the sacrifice He was going to make when He died for our sins on the cross (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

The early Church celebrated Jesus by taking communion, sometimes every day (Acts 2:42-46). They saw that every time they gathered around a table to eat and drink, it was a chance to recognize Jesus and thank God for all He’s done.

The body symbolized by bread

Jesus called Himself “the bread of life,” which means that we’re nourished by Him, we survive because of Him, and He satisfies us when everything else leaves us empty (John 6:48-51). His body was broken for our healing and our wholeness (Isaiah 53:5

The blood symbolized by juice or wine

Whether we are good or bad, all of mankind is born into sin and has a need for a Savior. There needed to be a sinless sacrifice given in our place. Jesus, who was without sing, shed His innocent blood on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins (Matthew 26:28).

Who should take communion?

Anyone that has confessed Jesus as Lord, and believes in their heart that He is risen from the dead, should take communion. It’s important to remember that taking communion doesn’t make us a Christian, but it does remind us of who saved us.

God actually warns us about taking communion without considering what it means and why we’re doing it. The intent is not for us to mindlessly perform a ritual, but to intentionally set aside time to remember what Jesus has done and why He did it (1 Corinthians 11:27-31).

an opportunity to accept jesus

Being a Christian doesn’t make one person better than another. Christians have just decided to surrender their life over to Jesus Christ. Jesus wants all people to come to know Him, and He gave His life for all (John 3:16).

If you would like to give your life to Christ you can do so today (Romans 10:9). If you would like more information on communion email us at connect@yoursummitchurch.com
